All grain Runoff for Yeast Starter?

Post  BassClefBrews on Tue Mar 30, 2010 8:59 pm

So I just started brewing all grain, and realize that after collecting my specified volume of wort, there is some left over. I was wondering if I could take the leftover wort from my grains and store it to use for yeast starters instead of using dme. Has anyone ever done this? Could i just store it in ball glass jars in the fridge and then boil it when needed? Obviously I would need to add a minimal amount of dme if needed to bring the gravity up, but if none is needed would it be alright to use for my starters. It seems like a waste to just toss out the extra wort that's left from all grain batches if it is the right gravity.

Boil it....with the leftover hops from the batch.

Or the bugs living in the grain will spoil it.

Are you saying boil it and then store it, or do you mean like a party gyle?

Boil it like you are making another beer...I would think that 20 minutes or so would be plenty long.

But make sure you sterilize your jars...

Just like in canning fruit/vegetables when you boil/steam sterilize jars to kill everything.
