What do you want to get out of this club?
I am looking for some input from all of you regarding what direction you want to take this club. In the near future we will establish what our yearly dues will be for membership. I want to get a clear picture of what you all are expecting from the club to determine how the funds will be spent. Here are a few of my ideas to get you started.
1. Library of brewing books for all to use
2. Invite guest speakers. Randy Mosher and Ray Daniels both live near Chicago.
3. Begin a club yeast bank of non commercially available yeasts.
4. Private brewery tours w/sampling
5. Club T-Shirts / Stickers
There that should get those creative juices flowing. Let's hear what you got! I look forward to your responses.
Cheers,
Chris

Re: What do you want to get out of this club?
First let me say, I'm grateful for this forum. Having said that and as a new comber to the art of home brew, I would donate to the "cause" I'm getting a kick out of this. ONLY if it's greenbacks are spent in a fiduciary method to the advancement of our cause nothing less would be a rip off....bpear

I'd like to see a hop rhizome exchange. Hop growers could trade different varieties with other growers, non-growers could purchase (for a nominal fee) rhizomes to get their own gardens growing.

We have a treasurer (Beth Jureczko) that will be keeping track of all dues and raffle money and the books will be open to any club member that would like to view them. Everyone who has volunteered their time to help make this happen is doing it for free.
I like the rhizome trade idea. You should start a thread about who is growing what types and we can start dialing that in.

What do I want to get out of this, huh?
Hows about a picnic?
An overnight road trip to a not to distant venue? (I hear the Livery is beautiful in the spring)
A club collaboration beer?
A big oaken bourbon barrel for said club collaboration beer?
A really nice hat?
Neat-o nicknames like Trub, Slurry, and Dodger?
A custom embroidered IBRU sham-wow?
A wicked pisser?
How to lessons on fabricating brewing implements like counter-flow chillers or hopbacks?
That's all for now...
IBRU, not high brau.

I like a few of the ideas given so far. Some kind of a summer picnic is a must. Guest speakers and private brewery tours could be cool. I know some people and could probably help set some of that up. I also think it would be nice if we could work out some bulk purchases in order to get some of our costs down for ingredients. Other then that, I just think it's great to have some people to talk about this with, that understand what you're talking about.

Unfortunately, I have been working 3-11 schedule and missed the first 2 meetings. I would like to learn more about styles of brews, and how to use hops in a more wide range(how hops change style/taste with same grain recipe). Also, get into the process of kegging on a small scale (5 gallon soda kegs) for cookouts/tailgating. It is great to see about getting into competitions, and visiting other breweries also. I'm sure we all have some favorite ones we visit now!

I would like to see a beer tasting class, so I have a better understanding of all the different flavors, aromas, and mouthfeels they describe in the competition guidelines.

To get better ideas and knowledge of the hobby.
I really like the Idea of bulk purchases. An affordable hobby is the best hobby.

Hey all
Just thought I'd add my .02
I would think a:
Picnic would be nice
Group buys
Outings or tours
A forum/library of involved members that will share ideas
A classified section that allows other to share/trade/buy/sell goods and equipment
oh and $1,000,000,000 (holding my pinky to the corner of my mouth)

Re: What do you want to get out of this club?
I would like to see more get-togethers and more "contact hours" with others that may want to do so. With only 12 meetings per year, and missing a few due to family / work schedules, that in my opinion does not give me enough opportunity to learn enough stuff about beer making.
Even though I have been brewing for about 8 years, I am still not sure how to fix some of my problems and improve upon the things I do well unless I can get advice from others that have been at it for longer or are more knowledgeable than I am.
I realize this is a "volunteer" organization, but if there were more opportunity for more activities (like a group brew day, or a brew day for newbies), I would definitely partake.
That said, I like the club, and the members are very nice. I just would like more "instructional" kind of meetings or side-meetings. Perhaps a sign up board for someone that may want to host a brew-day.
Just a few thoughts.

Re: What do you want to get out of this club?
Wow, what a list... Lots of stuff I would have posted.
My .02 would include in-club competitions.
Maybe a calendar (maybe just a few months ahead) so we can plot/brew?
Possibly, beer category of the month just to hone in competition brew skills. This might be a chance for the aspiring judges to test their palate.
