DME Additions
I was wondering if an addition of like type of DME would be proper to a batch of LME of same type. Could I assume the OG will be increased? and is there any rule of thumb to the proper amount of DME additions? I'm putting together a Std. American ale recipe to brew next weekend... Thanks

Re: DME Additions
There is no reason you can't mix dry with liquid malt extracts in the same recipe. I usually try to avoid liquid all together when I make up my own. And yes, your original gravity will indeed increase. That would be the whole point of adding it, right?
To be more specific, LME is about 20% water. So by comparison, if you add 4lbs of DME, it gives you about the same amount of sugars as adding 5lbs of LME.

Re: DME Additions
LME typically comes in quantities like 3.3 lb, and it's difficult to use a partial package, where it is very easy to measure out any quantity of DME. A lot of times an extract recipe will use mostly LME, but use whatever quantity of DME it takes to hit the target gravity.
Software like BeerSmith can be used to tell you the exact effect of LME and DME on a recipe's gravity.

Thanks guys, yes my goal is to increase the OG, since this is only my fourth batch and I have only used LME up to this point. I was kinda wanting to tinker a bit as I progress, just did not want to ruin my next batch an American (steam style) Ale...

Re: DME Additions
Being an extract brewer myself, the benefits of DME over LME far outway themselves. Like it has already been said, with DME you can weigh it out and add exactly what you need to hit your target OG , then you just store the rest. Plus you use less DME to hit your target OG than LME which in turn is less expensive. With LME, it's a mess, especially trying to get everything out of the container, and you have to use whatever amount is prepackaged. Just my 2 cents. After seeing how easy all grain is this weekend at Alan's house, I can say that I will be switching very soon.
